About Dr. Joseph P. Calderone
Drs. Joseph P. Calderone, Jr. and Richard M. Chopin are experienced ophthalmologists in Cranford, New Jersey. Dr. Calderone founded Cranford Ophthalmology, in 1987 and provides high quality LASIK, PRK, and LASEK vision correction surgeries, cataract surgeries, and glaucoma treatments, as well as a full optical shop.
Cranford Ophthalmology is in a building named after Dr. Calderone's father. His state-of-the-art facility is equipped with in-house lasers and the latest in ophthalmological
equipment.
Dr. Calderone received his AB cum laude from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts before obtaining his M.D. from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His post-doctoral training includes an internship at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York and ophthalmologic training at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York.

Dr. Richard M. Chopin
After many years in practice in Essex County, Dr. Chopin has joined the medical staff at Cranford Ophthalmology, where his skill, experience, and patience, is invaluable. Dr. Chopin is past Chairman of the Division of Ophthalmology at Overlook Hospital. And like Dr. Calderone, Dr. Chopin is also a clinical instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School.

Fees and Insurance
One way we help try to keep your medical and surgical bills as low as possible is by requesting payment for office visits on the day of the visit to minimize billing costs. Assistance in filing insurance claims is provided when needed so you can be reimbursed directly.
Insurance
Nearly all insurance plans cover surgical fees. The insurance companies will be billed directly in most surgical cases. You will be billed for any charges not covered by your policy, such as co-payments.
Medicare
Drs. Calderone and Chopin are Medicare participating physicians.
HMO's / Managed Care
Drs. Calderone and Chopin participate in most HMO's and other managed care plans. It is important to bring with you an up-to-date insurance identification card and a referral from your primary care provider if you belong to an HMO. Know too that eye care is medical care. Even if your plan does not typically include “vision,” many times a visit to the eye physician for medical reasons will be covered, provided you have a referral from your primary care provider.
